BOB BARNETT
PLAYWRIGHT, FREELANCE WRITER
I’m a playwright and a freelance writer/consultant
for corporate communications and themed entertainment.
I’ve written plays about a Hiroshima survivor and apocalypse on the Rio Grande,
screenplays about a serial killer and a billionaire hiding out with the unhoused.
I’ve written an opera libretto, a play that is conducted, a Purim spiel, a Christmas farce,
collaborated on a dance-theater performance that pissed off the Russian Secretary of Health,
and ran a small theater on a shoestring.
As a freelance writer/consultant I‘ve written videos for for an ear-piercing gun and
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology,
speeches for the mayor of Philadelphia and corporate CEOs,
developed master plans for architects, developers, and theme parks
and acted out a live stunt show through a Chinese interpreter.
I’ve written for Barbie and Tiffany, Qualcomm and General Mills,
Capital Group/American Funds and the Japanese American National Museum.
I’ve directed Pierce Brosnan and Little Richard for testimonial videos
and edited a book about alien abduction.
BACKGROUND/EDUCATION
I grew up in Southern California. After bounced back and forth between the two coasts
for much of my life, I’ve been back in New York for more than 15 years.
I graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA (Honors) in English. I was
Managing Editor of the student newspaper and wrote and directed my first plays.
I spent my junior year at the Rome campus, Loyola University of Chicago.
I talked my way into Yale School of Drama (now David Geffen School of Drama at Yale)
where I received my MFA in Playwriting and performed as a swimming, singing frog
in the world premiere of the Stephen Sondheim/Burt Shevelove
aquatic adaptation of Aristophanes' The Frogs.
I hung out at an archeological dig in Pompeii, made sock puppets with Indian kids
in Rajasthan, played theater games with children in Ghana, taught the basics of playwriting
to high school students in China, ran a street theatre troupe during AIDS, crossed the Atlantic
on a Polish freighter, was president of a rowing club on the Harlem River,
and taught first-time film directors how to work with actors in Los Angeles.
